Save the Date! March 10 "Pizza Night"

Pizza Night is rapidly approaching, so call your friends/family and mark March 10 on your calendar to visit Davanni's in Brooklyn Center. If you dine-in or carry-out an order from Davanni's on March 10 from 5:00-8:30pm, 20% of your bill will be donated to our future Reading Center.
Our "Leaders in Training" have been working hard tutoring our Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders in the school's Media Center, and are really excited to build their own Reading Center. Please support these students as they learn how to lead through service.

A (Mon)Day in the Life of Sheridan Beacons!

Hi everyone!! Hayley here! Here are some pictures of what was going on at Sheridan today:

Here is our Kindergarten group right after snack:

Sheridan Boys Basketball team had a game today against Clara Barton MS. The game went into triple overtime and Sheridan won!
Our Boys play next week at Washburn for the Finals!

One of our Community Partners is the Minnesota Textile Center. They come in every Monday to work with our young people on sewing projects.

Mr. Bethke's academic group, working hard!

Our 3-5th grade group had a Kiva gathering today. They focused on how we are all different, but have lots in common. This photo is of one of the activities where the group was moving all around the auditorium.

Next, I stopped by the Cheerleaders. They were working on tricks and jumps today. Here they are practicing.

Boyz 2 Men continued reading their book today. They are reading The Pact, a book about three young men in Newark, NJ who "made a promise to fulfill a dream."

One of our Jr. Staff helped a younger student study for a spelling test:

That is just a taste of what happens here at Beacons every day!

Check back for more updates!!

Beacons' L.I.T.'s Raise Money for Children's Reading Center

Sheridan Beacons' "Leaders In Training" are exemplifying the power and reach of youth voice. Given the social issue of illiteracy in children, the 7th & 8th graders envisioned creating a reading center within the Beacons' Office. The Reading Center will be an exciting, comfortable place for the Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students to be tutored by older students as well as to read leisurely. They have raised over $100 thus far, and they have a "pizza night" at the Brooklyn Park Davanni's on March 10th. Please go and support this student led endeavor to fight children's illiteracy within their own school.
